Your foot is made up of 26 little bones and 33 joints. It is important that all these joints and the surrounding muscles are performing properly so your foot can adapt to the different surfaces you stand on throughout the day. The foot has 2 main functions, weight bearing (standing) and propulsion (walking).

Foot and ankle injury usually occurs from 4 main causes; sudden trauma/sporting injuries, overuse injury, improper alignment and osteoarthritis/degeneration.

Overuse injuries are very common in runners and can include shin splints, achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis (plantar heel pain). Rolled ankles are very common in netball and basketball and often require sport specific exercises for a full recovery.

Your foot and ankle may also become painful with a sudden change in footwear or significantly change the surface you walk on (moving from a house with carpet to hard tiles). Hands on treatment to the painful area, strengthening and footwear advice can effectively manage the transition period.
