A little bit more about Pilates

Told you he always wore white jocks…

In such a busy world, we often do things mindlessly – not in Pilates!

Pilates requires concentration and focus.

One must be present during Pilates as the exercises are performed in precise range of movements, with a particular breathing pattern and rhythm.

The workout consists of a variety of exercises that change from session to session so you get a whole body workout.

There is an emphasis on quality rather than quantity. It is more important to perform each exercise with precision and stop when technique is becoming compromised than to attempt more repetitions with poor quality. Most exercises are performed in low repetitions of usually 5 to 10 times.

The exercises can be modified for any individual from elite athletes to pregnant women and even older individuals.

So what are the benefits of Pilates?

  • Improves core strength
  • Improves flexibility
  • Improves mind-body awareness
  • Improves coordination and balance
  • Improves concentration
  • Reduces back and neck pain
  • Improves general muscle strength
  • Reduces stress
  • Prevents musculoskeletal injury
  • Aids rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Increases lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing

What can I expect if I come to a Pilates class at Phyx?

Don’t worry, we wont do that to you! 😉

Our Adelaide Pilates classes at Phyx are mat-based classes. This means that the exercises are performed on the floor using gravity and your own body weight to provide the resistance. We will also use some of the smaller equipment such as resistance therabands, chi balls and tennis balls.

The exercises vary from lesson to lesson not only to keep in interesting, but to also ensure good all body strengthening and stretching.

The class starts with a warm up, generally in standing (but not always), the majority of the class is strength work with stretching in-between as we recover from an exercise, and we finish the class with a light cool down.

You can expect to leave feeling longer and leaner, stronger and happier 🙂

We never want to cause any extra pain during Pilates. There is an emphasis that all exercises will be performed within pain free range.

We expect you will go home feeling better than when you walked in.

What if I can’t kneel?

That’s okay if you can’t bear weight in kneeling directly onto your knees. The exercises can be modified to suit you.

What if I can’t get up and down off the floor?

To attend our classes, you must be able to get up and down from the floor – even if it’s not very graceful. We have some older people who require a chair that they use to help push up from when getting up at the end of class, and your instructor will also be able to help. We have great over 50’s classes, so no need to feel self-conscious.
