What conditions can our Pelvic Floor Physiotherapists help with?

Usually encouraged from your 2nd Trimester, your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can get a baseline assessment of your pelvic floor strength and position of your pelvic organs. Towards the end of your pregnancy, we can discuss things like effective pushing technique, birth positions, pain management strategies and perineal massage.

Encouraged from 6 weeks post birth (depending on each individual’s birth experience) to assess tissue healing, pelvic floor muscle strength and endurance, and position of your pelvic organs.

Commonly seen conditions include Stress Urinary incontinence (leakage with a cough, sneeze etc) or Urgency Urinary Incontinence. These conditions have very different causes, and in many cases, conservative treatment by a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can help reduce symptoms.

Symptoms of a Pelvic Organ Prolapse can include vaginal heaviness, dragging, bulging, trouble emptying your bowels, urinary symptoms and sexual dysfunction. A prolapse is defined as a dropping down of your pelvic organs causing an anterior wall, posterior wall or uterine prolapse. A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist can assess the severity of your prolapse and offer conservative management strategies to help you continue to do the things you love!

This includes maintaining control of your bowels, with either stool or wind. Many women feel embarrassed to talk about issues relating to their bowels and often put off seeking treatment because of it. It can be incredibly debilitating and greatly impact many aspects of your life. Causes can include stool type, constipation, nerve damage or damage to the muscles that control your bowel motions.Your Pelvic Health Physio can assess your anal sphincter muscles, discuss other possible influences and work out the best plan to help treat your symptoms.

A broad range of symptoms including trouble emptying bowels or infrequent bowel motions. Working out a plan with your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist might include discussions around diet, behaviour changes or a referral to a Medical Practitioner if needed.

This can include Vaginismus, Obstructed Intercourse and Vulvodynia.
Your pelvic floor muscles can sometimes play a role in why you are experiencing pain during intercourse. Ask your Pelvic Health Physio how they can help.
