Whiplash Injury: What To Do After A Whiplash Injury
Blog
whiplash injury

Whiplash is an injury to the soft tissues in your neck.

It occurs when your head moves backwards and then forward very suddenly and with great force.

This movement can strain the joints, muscles, ligaments, discs or nerves in your neck.

It is a very common injury following a rear-end car collision, or even from sporting injuries or amusement park rides.

Your symptoms might not be apparent for a few days, so it’s important to keep an eye out for any symptoms and try and get on top of them early.

Here are 5 things that may help if you find yourself needing some guidance on how to manage your injury!

Get On Top Of The Pain Early

Your neck won’t be too painful at the time of the accident, but there is normally a gradual increase in pain over the next 48-72 hours after the accident.

Use either a heat bag to help reduce muscle stiffness for the first few days – approx 20 mins every 3-4 hours.

If you are already on medications for other health conditions, just double check with your Doctor before you take any anti-inflammatories.

Stay Active And Working If Possible

Rest is good, but prolonged immobilising is not!

Keep doing your usual daily activities as much as you can.

People who stay at work have also been shown to have a better recovery than people who take a long time off.

Just make sure to change any work routines that will really stress your neck, or talk to your health care professional about ways to modify tasks.

Keep Your Neck Gently Moving – 4 Exercises

Just like with any other injury, keeping your neck still for too long will stiffen up your neck.

These exercises may help to keep your muscles and joints moving and reduce postural strain and pain.

Make sure to control your movements so that they are slow and smooth and keep your mouth and jaw relaxed.

Remember not to push your neck into any pain and avoid sudden jerky movements.

Be Minful Of Your Posture

Set up your work or social spaces so that you are in the best position for your spine.

Poor posture will put more strain through your neck and shoulders and can even make your pain worse.

Correct posture will help take some of the load off of your neck and shoulders.

A few tips are:

  • Make sure your computer is directly in front of you and your desk is at a height that you
  • Get up and move around every hour or so if you are at work
  • In social situations, sit where you can see people straight on

If only giving 10 stars were an option here. I first attended Phyx almost 4 years ago for a niggling pain that after a few visits came good. Then after an injury about a year ago with pinched nerves causing radiating pain in the shoulder area, I returned to visit Phyx again. I started with hands-on physio treatment and then added some one one-on-one Pilates sessions with the physio and now on to group Pilates classes. The hands-on treatment is great as the physios really listen, focus on what you're saying, and are obviously highly skilled to rectify tricky problems. My GP and specialist told me surgery was the only answer, but so far with the treatment from Phyx we're proving that wrong. From day one the team has been amazing, and very professional. Everyone is so polite, friendly and welcoming. Especially making a bloke feel comfortable in fitting into Pilates classes that are generally considered to be a "Ladies' thing". Let me just say, get in there guys it really is a full workout. Thank you all very much.

So far I have only had the Physio consultation and have booked into my first Pilates class which will be soon (this is why I have only put 4 stars). The Receptionist was friendly and the Physiotherapist was very thorough and also friendly and I felt comfortable asking any questions. She took me into the studio and showed me a few exercises. I am looking forward to starting my classes soon.

The team at Phyx are amazing!! From the moment you are greeted at the front desk you are treated with genuine care and kindness. I've been going to Phyx for treatment on a back/neck issue and I am so impressed with the results. The physio team are very knowledgeable, professional and are only interested in achieving the best outcomes for their clients. I also love their pilates classes - they are physio-led and suit anyone, from beginners to elite level. Highly recommend Phyx! 🙂
